So You Want to Be a Speaker

What Beginners Need to Know about the Business of Professional Speaking

I’m getting an increasing number of questions from folks who want to explore the world of professional speaking:

  • How long does it take to be successful?
  • How much is it going to cost?
  • What tools do I need?
  • What should I speak on?
  • Where do I start?
  • What do I charge (and when should I speak for free)?
  • Where do I go for training?

Professional speaking not as glamorous as it looks and it isn’t all standing ovations and rock star treatment. It is one of the highest failure rate businesses. What you don’t know can cost you big money.

This session will answer those questions. It is for an aspiring speaker or author who needs to speak to audiences in order to sell their book. It’s designed to provide an overview of details that the aspiring professional speaker needs to know about the business to begin the journey.

Other important details:

  • The session will be recorded so it is crucial that you arrive early to eat.

  • We’ll have 60 minutes of information and then allow for 30 minutes of questions and answers at the end. Because the session will be recorded, we will probably have to hold additional questions to the end.

  • If you know the questions you’d like to ask ahead of time, make (provided they are within the scope of the program), e-mail those ahead.

  • ComTech, an IT solutions provider, has graciously sponsored the meal from World Garden. We’ll get to learn a more about their business as well.

Seminar Facilitator

Carrie Perrien Smith launched her speaking career in 2003 as a way to market her consulting work. It led her to eventually open Arkansas’ first professional speaker bureau.

Carrie serves the meetings industry and local companies by helping them find the right speaker, trainer, and consultant for their needs. She’s worked with established speakers as well as emerging speakers. She’s studied the different business models used by the most successful speakers in the business.

Along her journey to learn this challenging business, she’s invested heavily in her professional development. In a business with a steep learning curve, she can tell you what works and where she’s found the best tools and training for the journey. What she knows can help you reach your goals and bypass the roadblocks that many speakers encounter.

Her company, Soar with Eagles, also provides a suite of services for speakers that includes book publishing. Click here to earn more about those.
